Why study film?
As a serious student of film, you will begin to look at films as more than just entertainment. But why bother to study film in a structured, academic way? Here are some of the reasons for studying film;
It well help you to improve your analytical skills
It will help be more more critical as a film viewer
It will allow you to broaden your theoretical and historical understanding of film
It will broaden your experience of film
It will help you to think about issues in a new way
Above all, it will be a stimulating and fascinating course of study which will ultimately enrich your own enjoyment and appreciation of film

Essential items before beginning your studies
You can get this text book from our library at Sutton Coldfield Campus. It is a great resource for the general themes, issues and ideas you will be dealing with on the course. Buy a copy if you can.
Also, it is useful to watch a few 'classic' films before you begin the course. Here are a few suggestions;
Citizen Kane (Wells, 1942)
North By North West (Hitchcock, 1959)
The Godfather (Coppola, 1972)
Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994)
Seven (Fincher, 1995)
These are just suggestions, but you can find a comprehensive list in the text book above, on page 20 of the second edition of the book.

Summary
Your reflective analysis should include the following:
• Attention to the codes and conventions of your chosen genre
Details of your target audience
Some details as to whether the film ismainstrea m orniche
An understanding of wider production values
Your sources of inspiration for your movie and sequence
References to other films or film-makers whose work has been influential
• An understanding of how this sequence fits into the wider film and where it
is located
• A balance of the technical codes and your creative choices utilizing all
appropriate terminology
• An explanation of influential artistic devices and styles (e.g.: symbolism,
expressionism etc.)
• An acknowledgement of the technical or practical difficulties in devising the
